Key Scenarios and Personas

Key Scenarios Methodology

Key scenarios are stories that define users’ most critical and important goals they achieve on your website or application.  As opposed to use cases which describe the entire functionality of your system, user scenarios describe common pathways.

Example scenarios:

Example 1:
A customer would like to record a television program at 5:00pm to watch at a later date.

She browses through a tv schedule showing upcoming television programming, selects the right channel to record and presses the record button.

The system confirms the future recording and displays a list of other programming the user may want to watch now based on the selection she just made.

The user can then watch these programs for a one-time charge, or continue watching live tv.

Example 2:
A customer would like to watch a program he recorded in the past.

He turns on his television set and uses the remote to go to the main menu.

From the main menu, there is an option to browse recordings, and from the list he selects the program he would like to watch.

When the program is complete, the user is presented with a list of similar shows he can watch on demand for a one-time fee.

Key Benefits:

Scenarios tell a broad story about the user goals and intents and help frame the core experience of your product.

By focusing on a list of key scenarios, you prioritize design and development efforts on the most important flows through your site or application.

Edge cases have a time and place, but if you focus on the core experiences first, you will achieve the greatest ROI.
