A+ Employer Award - Honored by the Sacramento Business Journal

Blast nominated for A+ Award

We are excited to announce that Blast Advanced Media has been recognized as a finalist for the A+ Employers of 2008 awards by the Sacramento Business Journal.

Honored in the Micro category, we are one of only 10 companies with 1 to 25 employees to be honored with this award. The A+ Employers award is based on, among other factors, detailed surveys filled out by company team members. Only 38 companies of any size in the greater Sacramento area are being honored as finalists.

We are especially excited because this award comes shortly before we will be celebrating our 10th anniversary as a leading web design company in Northern California.

Congratulations to our client and friends at Descor Builders for being honored as an A+ Employer for the second year in a row!

Thank you to all who have contributed to Blast over the years as clients, friends, and team members.

Make it a Great Day!

Get more details and register for the event at the Sacramento Business Journal.

.net Magazine Features Sacramento Web Site Design

We were recently recognized by .net magazine, a globally recognized magazine focused on the latest trends in web design and development, for our work on the Roseville Health & Wellness Center web site redesign. Here's what they had to say:

"Neat, accessible, fast loading and intelligent - that's Roseville Health and Wellness Center's website. It has the kind of flair and graphical polish that many a CSS website misses, yet manages to be packed with content and photos without looking cluttered or throwing up error messages in W3C tests. Blast Advanced Media are old hands at this type of site, producing dozens of equally impressive standard-based beauties, but Roseville's colour palette and treatment of the photos are uncommon and make it an instantly recognisable visit. Roseville must be chuffed with the quality here, and there will be no need to change the design for years to come."

What People Say Isn't Necessarily What They Do

There is a funny story about this fundamental truth.

When Sony was introducing the boom box, the company gathered a group of potential consumers and held a focus group on what color the new product should be: black or yellow.

After some discussion among the group of likely buyers, everyone agreed that consumers would better respond to yellow. After the session, the facilitator thanked the group, and then mentioned that, as a bonus, they were welcome to take a free boom box on the way out. There were two piles of boom boxes. yellow and black. Every person took a black boom box.

The important thing to point out is that people are telling the truth, but what they believe about their behavior doesn't always reflect reality. This is why it is critical to watch what people really do, and not simply trust what they tell you they do.

This is why we do user testing. When we are designing web sites and performing web site evaluations, we sit down next to a user and watch how they use the web site. We are looking for behavioral answers to questions such as:

  • • Does the design help users do "x"? ("x" being the desired action)
  • • What obstacles does the design create?

It often becomes quickly apparent where the major obstacles are and whether or not the web site is meeting people's needs in an efficient manner when you perform such user testing. The best thing is that it is a very easy and inexpensive process. So there is no reason to not be performing such tests to identify problems with your site design that are also typically very easy and inexpensive to fix. Interested to learn what obstacles may be facing your web site visitors? Request a Free Web Site Evaluation Now

Welcoming Amy Jackson to the Team

We wanted to officially welcome Amy Jackson to the Blast Advanced Media Team. Amy has a degree in Digital Media Communications and is pretty much otherwise just an all around bad ass. Amy has already proved to be a great asset to the office with her organizational skills, professional demeanor in greeting and assisting clients, and helping with just about anything and everything to help keep things running smooth around here. With all of her great talents, which include some mighty fine knitting skills, we expect she will eventually be making more of a transition into a fully functioning member of the production team sometime in the near future.

Turn Browsers into Buyers

The sense of urgency is a key ecommerce sales tactic. Our new Motivity web site management platform offers almost unlimited ways to customize online sales promotions to turn browsers into buyers.

The new promotions functionality allows the store owner to easily setup store specials for free shipping, store-wide discounts, category specific savings, product specific deals and coupons/promo codes that can be based on quantity, order value, one-time use or multiple use. Promotions are automatically displayed on the appropriate category and product level pages. Promotional emails can be customized and automated to send out thank you messages at desired frequencies after a customer places an order. This creates opportunities to encourage product reviews in exchange for additional savings and for viral marketing by offering specials that can be shared with friends. See the new functionality by browsing or buying at Elegant Arbors, Gazebo Village, Backyard Fire Pits or Original Sheds.

Golden Eagles New Web Site Connects with Fans

We designed and programmed a new website for the Del Oro High School football program. Created as a gift to the community, the new website features an online store, blog, fundraising through advertising, and a content management system that allows the team to easily update the site. Check the schedule, view the featured video, read game highlights or meet the team at www.goldeneaglefootball.com.

The online store will raise funds for the football program by selling clothing and other memorabilia. New online advertising allows local sponsors to connect themselves with the area's #1 high school football team, while supporting the program. In addition to e-commerce and advertising, Coaches Casey Taylor and Steve Birch get personal in the Coach's Corner blog.

"It feels good to have support from a local company like Blast. We have needed a website for many years and to have a quality product like Blast put together is awesome," said Coach Taylor. "Del Oro Football is about tradition - it is a way of life in Loomis. We work very hard at what we do and support from family, friends, staff, students and community is second to none."

The community connection is deep for Blast Advanced Media founder and CEO, Kayden Kelly. "I promised myself that if I was ever in the position to give back I would; especially to schools," said Kelly. "I have friends and family who graduated from Del Oro including my wife, Christine Kelly (maiden name Stacy), and this made it even more special to contribute to this local high school."

The football program is looking for volunteers to manage the online store and advertising. Interested persons can submit contact information through the website at www.goldeneaglefootball.com on the Contact page.

Del Oro High School was founded in 1958 and currently has about 1,530 students. Del Oro High School's mission is to create an atmosphere of excellence and integrity in a safe, supportive, and respectful environment where all students can engage in the learning process, apply knowledge, and contribute as responsible members of a global community. The Del Oro High School campus is located in Loomis, CA. Learn more at www.puhsd.k12.ca.us/deloro.

Get On The Bus!

As many of you know, our team has grown exponentially over the past year and a half. We are proud to announce the addition of some new, talented members of the bus...

It has been a while since he joined the team, back in February as a matter of fact, but we wanted to recognize Joe Christopher who came on-board to handle a multitude of web development, system administration and technology duties. So far, Joe has had a massive impact on day to day life here at Blast. Joe has been a great asset in helping the company to grow and push the envelope with solid knowledge, experience and bright ideas which have our clients raving about him!

Not so, so long ago but still back a few months back in June, Travis Martin decided to hitch a ride on the bus that is Blast Advanced Media. He joins the team as our resident technology and software applications engineer. In addition to bringing some serious development and programming skills to the team, he also now serves as the second most fanatic cycler on the ever growing Blast Advanced Media "Cycling Team". Travis will be a wonderful asset to an already multi-talented development team. He has incredible knowledge and experience which will add tremendous value to all of our technology platforms. It is great to have him on board!

And last but not least, Charles Davis joins the team tasked with Business Development and Project Management duties. Charles brings to the team a solid background in terms of the software and technology development process and has worked closely with our team before joining Blast. He will serve as a confident and knowledgeable first point of contact for all new and future business clients. And even though he likes soccer, we still hired him.

The CSAC-EIA Is A Super Client!

We launched a redesigned web site for the CSAC-EIA and shortly after, the site is already getting increased traffic and conversions. With clear Calls To Action on the homepage, users are quickly learning more about how this organization helps its members and how they can get more involved. I enjoyed working with the EIA team during the redesign.

They were prepared, proactive and thoughtful about their decisions. They paid close attention to site details and were also open to our new ideas. We're working on a thorough case study to demonstrate how the redesign is helping users more quickly and easily find needed content.

We may not be the first green web development agency out there but we're doing our part. I all that we do, our team has a commitment to improving both the people and the world around us. Participating in a Green program is just one small contribution to that end.

Enrolling in Green Roseville reduces emissions by 100%. For the average residential customer, enrollment prevents the emission of 7,728 pounds of Carbon Dioxide a year, which has an environmental impact equivalent to not driving for 2/3 of the year or planting over 500 trees. By supporting renewable energy, you can help protect the environment by offsetting the need for more fossil fuel generation. In addition, renewable energy can help reduce our nation’s reliance on fossil fuels.

When it was time to re-examine how the WeDrive California web site fit into the most recent marketing initiative, Blast Advanced Media was asked to help bring it more in line with the updated philosophy and visual direction. We reviewed the organization’s position and online strategy and through consultation with the client established a concept that reflects the values of the new campaign. Through custom CMS modules, the organization's representatives are able to maintain a meaningful dialogue with site visitors by way of timely news, event and article updates.
