if the comment on tip #42 were to be true, people wouldn’t do business with companies like newegg and overstock, or ebay for that matter (ebay stores)

These theories spawned off by the likes of clotaire rapaille have been hugely overhyped..
Consumers are too marketing savvy to fall for this stuff these days.

Another thing, I’d argue that with the advent of spam oversaturation (which is getting progressively worse). This desensitization to homepages loitered with offers would eventually work against your clients. (Unless you’re walmart/target of course.)
